Compliance
Hosting in Germany: GDPR and EU Data Protection
For a lot of buyers the reason to put a server in Germany is not latency at all — it is where the data sits. A machine in a German facility processes and stores your data inside the European Union and under German data-protection law, which is among the more strictly enforced implementations of the GDPR. That matters for the records that are awkward to move: customer and client databases, authentication and session stores, financial and transaction logs, CRM and SaaS back ends, and anything carrying personal data belonging to EU residents.
What the location does and does not give you
Choosing an EU location removes one specific problem, which is the transfer of personal data outside the EU and the safeguards that transfer requires. It is a useful simplification and it is often the deciding factor in a procurement review. It is not compliance on its own. On a single-tenant unmanaged server you remain the controller of what you put on the disk, which means the lawful basis for processing, retention and deletion schedules, encryption at rest, access control and breach notification are all still yours to implement and document.
Practical points worth settling before you order
Decide where your backups will live, because a German primary with an off-EU backup target re-introduces exactly the transfer you were avoiding. Agree who holds root and how that access is logged, since on an unmanaged build that is you. If a data processing agreement is part of your paperwork, raise it before you deploy rather than after, and ask us rather than assuming. And keep a record of the facility and region your server runs in — it is the first thing an auditor asks for and the easiest thing to lose track of once a box has been running for a year.
Location
Germany's Latency and Cost Position in Europe
Germany sits at the network crossroads of Europe, and the practical effect is that one server reaches most of the continent quickly. Typical round-trip times from a German facility look roughly like this, and they are the reason trading terminals, multiplayer game servers, browser automation and admin dashboards are the workloads that end up here.
| From a German facility to | Typical round trip |
|---|---|
| Western Europe | 10–20 ms |
| Eastern Europe | 20–35 ms |
| The Nordics | 25–40 ms |
Treat those as a planning range rather than a promise: your own path depends on your carrier. Measure it with our Looking Glass before you commit, which takes a few minutes and settles the question for your actual connection.
Why German capacity costs what it does
Germany is unusual in combining dense, well-connected data-centre capacity with power and bandwidth costs that are moderate for Western Europe. Several neighbouring markets are more expensive per unit of capacity — the United Kingdom largely on power and transit, and Switzerland on almost everything, with less room to scale up afterwards. The result is that the same generation of processor, the same NVMe storage and the same port speed land at a lower monthly figure here than in most of the surrounding region.
That is the trade worth understanding when you compare this page against a cheaper build elsewhere: you are not paying extra for the German location, you are paying for the hardware generation and the uplink listed on each card above. If your audience is further west, our France dedicated servers sit on the same network; if it is in North America, the USA builds will answer faster.
